Understanding Grades of Oils
Did you know that there is a BIG difference between types of Essential Oils.
There was a time when I thought oils were oils. I had no idea about the possibilities of naturally supporting my health with Essential Oils.
There are 4 Grades of Essential Oils:
• Grade A oils are pure therapeutic quality and are usually made from organically grown plants distilled at the proper temperatures using steam distillation.
• Grade B oils are food grade; they may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, extenders, or carrier oils.
• Grade C oils are perfume grade and may contain the same type of adulterating chemicals as food grade oils. They usually contain solvents which are used to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Solvents are normally cancerous.
• Floral Water is a byproduct of the distillation process, a very high quality if it comes from a Grade A distillation process. Accordingly it is of low quality if it comes from poor quality raw materials and or poor distillation processes. It is usually found in skin and hair products.
A WORD ABOUT PURITY
TRUessence Essential Oils are derived directly from the plant as intended by nature, not in a laboratory. They are never extended/adulterated with chemicals.
Please do not think that you can buy less expensive, cheap-quality essential oils and get therapuetic results.
DANGERS OF ADULTERATED OILS
For example, much of the lavender oil sold in America is a hybrid called lavandin. Lavadin is cut with chemicals to improve the fragrance. Then solvents are added and it is sold in the United States as lavender oil.
Most consumers don't know the difference, and are happy to buy it for $3 to $10 per half ounce in health food stores, beauty salons, grocery and department stores, and through mail order.
When people do not get the benefit they expected they conclude that essential oils do not have much value when in actualitythey purchased either a synthetic or adulterated oil.
Adulterated and mislabeled essential oils present dangers for consumers.
Adulterated oils that are cut with synthetic extenders can cause rashes, burning, and skin irritations. Solvents can all cause allergic reactions, besides being devoid of any therapeutic effects.
Quality does matter -- and using a cheap oil that you don't the history of can harm your health.
Why Therapeutic-grade?
Organic or wildcrafted therapeutic-grade essential oils contain nothing artificial nor have they been grown or extracted with artificial and harmful fertilizers or solvents. They contain no nut oils, extenders, or synthetic additives which diminish or counteract their therapeutic action.
They are carefully selected with the utmost importance given to botanical species, country of origin, growing conditions, harvesing and extraction method, and even which part of the plant is used. Each of these factors greatly impact the quality and therapeutic properties of the essential oil.
Therapeutic essential oils can be used in many preventative and pleasurable ways:
- supercharge your immune system and fight illness and disease
- provide your body with the raw materials and energies to help repair itself and heal
- indulge in a relaxing massage or unwind in a hot, soothing bath
- relieve a headache or ease aches and pains
- lift your spirits, calm overly-rambunctious kids, or even set a romantic mood
- quiet your mind or energize your day
- chase away mice and the things that "bug" you
- disinfect your environment and protect your family
- add flavor to food and purify drinking water
the list is endless
